SF Bay Area Autumn 2018 Session

6th Session of the Society of Turkish Classical Music Workshops

November 15-18, Thursday – Sunday

& a Sunday Evening Concert in Berkeley.

WHAT IT IS:

All musicians interested in Classical Turkish and Mevlevi Music traditions are encouraged to join us in Pinole for the SF Bay Area Autumn 2018 session of the Society of Turkish Classical Music. This is a very rare opportunity for dedicated instruction in the U.S. Dr. Timuçin Çevikoğlu, master Turkish musician, will offer instruction in Voice, Ney, Percussion, and a Vocal/Instrumental Ensemble class, which will also include Makam (Melodic Theory) and Ussul (Rhythmic Theory), for the Turkish Classical and Devotional styles.


WHEN:

The Main Session will be offered in Pinole,

November 15-18, 2018.


Four days of group instruction:

Thursday, & Friday, November 15th & 16th 3p-8p with meal break (donation requested) and tea.

Saturday, November 17th, 10a until 5p with a lunch break (donation requested) and tea.

Sunday, November 18th, 10a-4p with a lunch break (donation requested) and tea.


Sunday Concert at 7:30p, St. Clement's Episcopal Church, Berkeley.

***These times are somewhat flexible depending on Hoca's assessment of the group's needs and capacity****


Thursday/Friday Supplemental Session:

1:30p-3p. $50 per session/$80 both days.


CLASS DESCRIPTIONS:


Ayin EnsembleStudy of Mevlevi Sema Ayin and Turkish vocal techniques for experienced Turkish music instrumentalists and singers. Ability to read musical notation is recommended.


Ney & Melody Instruments

Instruction in Ney technique by a Master Neyzen from Turkey. Open to players of the Turkish Ney and other melodic instruments such as Oud, Tanbur, and Violin. Suitable for intermediate to advanced musicians in Turkish Classical Music.


Percussion

Training in Turkish-style Bendir (Frame Drum), Kudum (Kettle Drums), and usûl (Turkish Rhythms). Open to all levels. Limited Bendirs available for loan. Percussion instruction continues into the Instrumental Ensemble.


Instrumental Ensemble

For percussionists and all Turkish melodic instrumentalists. Ensemble practice on Saz Semai and other Classical forms. Open to all instrumentalists, including percussionists, transitioning into Ilahi Ensemble performance.


Ilahi Ensemble

Exploration of Turkey’s vast ilahi devotional song repertoire. Open to all singers and instrumentalists experienced in Turkish Music.


COST:

Tuition for the Main Session: $355 (includes admission to Sunday concert)

Tuition for adding Supplemental Sessions: $50 per daily class/$80 for both days.


ASSISTANCE for those who would like to come, but need some help:

-Student and youth (25 and under), senior citizens (65+) some service discounts available.

-Ask us if you'd like to be considered for partial work-trade (limited availability).

-Payment plans available upon request.

-Please consider donating, as you are able, to our scholarship fund!


Additionally, there will be a musical "Meshk" concert evening with Timuçin and U.S. musicians, at St. Clement's Episcopal Church, Sunday evening at 7:30pm (doors at 7pm).

Admission included for all full-time workshop participants.

(Donation of $15 advance/$20 at door)
