Circle of Remembrance - Portland, OR - past

STCM is proud to offer several events in Portland: a Classical Persian and Turkish Music Improvisational Concert, a moving musical zikr in the Classical Turkish Musical tradition, and several opportunities to study Turkish Classical Music in the traditional manner called Meşk. This traditional teaching method was developed over 100's of years to teach this music from master to student. (Available for instrument, drum, and voice). Study in all meşk groups will include Uşşak and Hüseyni makam ilahis, and a deep dive study into the Acemaşiran Ayin written by Hüseyin Fahrettin Dede (1854-1911) a great Ney virtuoso who was known for his witty, sociable, gentle and humble personality.


Tuesday, December 5 – Meşk – covering the traditional Spirituals of Turkish Classical Music. These often use the poems of Yunus Emre, a 12th-century Turkish poet, and can include up to 800 years of musical literature. The class will include Uşşak and Hüseyni makam Ilahîs.

Thursday, December 7 – Meşk – a study into the beautiful Acemaşiran Ayin written by Hüseyin Fahrettin Dede (1854-1911).


Friday, December 8 – Vivid Reflections on Hope ConcertConcert: Vivid Reflections on Hope – Portland OR

Join us for an enchanting evening of improvisational Persian and Turkish music and Rumi poetry at the Vivid Reflections on Hope event. Immerse yourself in the mesmerizing melodies and soulful tunes that will transport you to distant lands.

Experience the rich cultural heritage of Persian and Turkish music as Dr. Çevikoğlu, Maestro Hossein Salehi, Bobak Salehi, and Dr. Behnam Compani-Tabrizi take you on a journey filled with passion and emotion. In grateful collaboration with Art Max Academy, and the Mevlevi Order of America.


Saturday, December 9 – Circle of Remembrance Zikr

Join us for an enchanting evening of spiritual connection and inner peace at the Circle of Remembrance event. Immerse yourself in the mesmerizing blend of Turkish music and the profound practice of Sufi Zikr, a form of moving prayer that aims to awaken the heart and nourish the soul. In grateful collaboration with the Threshold Society of Portland.


Sunday, December 10 - Classical Turkish Drumming Masterclass Masterclass: Classical Turkish Drumming for Sema and Zikr – Hybrid

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced musician, this class is for anyone passionate about music and eager to explore new sounds. Learn the intricate rhythms, techniques, and cultural significance of the bendir and kudûm drums in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
