SOCIETY FOR TURKISH CLASSICAL MUSIC ANNUAL WORKSHOP 2019

This workshop is a rare opportunity for intensive instruction in Turkish Classical and Sufi musical traditions with Dr. Timuçin Çevikoğlu, a master musician, recording artist, and educator based in Ankara, Turkey who performs and teaches worldwide.

Students will learn makam (melodic theory) and üsül (rhythmic theory) in the context of study and performing Ottoman classical and devotional repertoire, including the ayin music of the Mevlevi ”whirling dervish” ceremony (sema). Dr. Çevikoğlu will also offer instruction in singing, percussion, and Turkish ney flute.

Vocalists of all levels, players of Turkish and Middle Eastern classical instruments, percussionists, and players of western instruments (such as the string family) capable of playing outside the system of equal temperament are all welcome.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

  1. Percussion class—bendir (frame drum), kudum (kettle drum), üsül (rhythmic patterns), percussion technique
  2. Vocal class—ilâhi (devotional Sufi songs), na’at (Mevlevi prayer), ayin (Mevlevi “whirling dervish” music), Fasıl songs (secular Turkish art songs), vocal technique
  3. Instrumental Repertoire–peşrevi, saz semaisi (Ottoman classical music)
  4. Ayin class (Mevlevi “whirling dervish” music) for instrumentalists and vocalists
  5. Ney Class–beginner to advanced (Turkish end-blown reed flute; if you would like to purchase a ney, please let us know in advance)

REGISTRATION AND PAYMENT

The price of the full four-day workshop, all classes, and concert included is $350.00

One full day of classes costs $90.00

Individual classes cost $30.00 each.

The lecture on Tuesday, November 19 at 3:30-5:00 is free of charge.

Admission to the concert and dessert social for those not attending the workshop is by suggested donation of $15-20.

Participants may pre-register and pay for classes via PayPal.

Please specify which classes you would like to attend, and you will be sent an invoice. Participants may register and pay upon arrival at the workshop as well. Please notify us of your intention to participate.

CONCERT, DESSERT AND TEA SOCIAL

We invite you to join master musician Timuçin Çevikoğlu from Ankara and friends on Saturday, November 10th at the Interfaith Community Sanctuary in Ballard for an evening of exquisite Ottoman Turkish Classical and Sufi Music beginning at 7:30 PM, with a dessert and tea social to follow. Dr. Çevikoğlu is in Seattle once more to offer instruction at The Circle of Meshk: A Workshop in Turkish Classical Music from Nov. 8­–11 at the ICS (visit https://www.rumiseattle.org for details).

Admission is by suggested donation of $15–$20, with all proceeds benefitting the continuing educational projects of The Society for Turkish Classical Music (STCM), an organization devoted to promotes public awareness and appreciation for this unique musical and cultural form through concerts, lectures, demonstrations, and publications. Please join us for a unique evening of sweet music, poetry, and desserts, and the opportunity to meet a master Turkish musician.
