Dear Friends of the Society of Turkish Classical Music,

We are happy to announce an upcoming series of classes to be offered by Dr. Timuçin Çevikoğlu through the Society for Turkish Classical Music (STCM).

This term, we will look in-depth at: 

• Beginning to mid-level theory with a practical focus on ilâhîs and simple vocal and instrumental pieces. Included would be basic makam and usûl (rhythm), modulations, various musical forms within each genre, the meanings of the lyrics, the study of the composers and poets, their backgrounds, and their significance within the tradition.
• Advanced theory examining the Mevlevi Ayins, their composers, poetry forms, and inner and outer meaning of the lyrics. The class will include makam, modulation, and usûl. Some of the classical forms such as Murabba, Nakız, Peshrev, and Saz Semaisi will also be explored.

There will be a 1.5 hour class for the basic theory/ilâhî study on alternating Saturdays, followed after a short break by a 1.5-hour class offering the deep theory and Mevlevi Ayin focus on the same day. Participants are welcome to join one or both of the classes.

The first class will begin Saturday morning, September 11, 2021.

The Fee Structure

The Fee Structure is $25 per 1.5-hour class and $50 per 3-hour class. A 10% discount will be offered to those paying for the series in full at the beginning of the class series.

It is the mission of the STCM to encourage the knowledge and practice of this great musical tradition for its preservation and continuance. Your participation is important to us. We will make efforts to provide scholarship funds to help make this experience possible for as many as possible.
