STCM is proud to offer several events in Portland: a Classical Persian and Turkish Music Improvisational Concert, a moving musical zikr in the Classical Turkish Musical tradition, and several opportunities to study Turkish Classical Music in the traditional manner called Meşk. This traditional teaching method was developed over 100’s of years to teach this music from master to student. (Available for instrument, drum, and voice). Study in all meşk groups will include Uşşak and Hüseyni makam ilahis, and a deep dive study into the Acemaşiran Ayin written by Hüseyin Fahrettin Dede (1854-1911) a great Ney virtuoso who was known for his witty, sociable, gentle and humble personality.
Tuesday, December 5 – Meşk – covering the traditional Spirituals of Turkish Classical Music. These often use the poems of Yunus Emre, a 12th-century Turkish poet, and can include up to 800 years of musical literature. The class will include Uşşak and Hüseyni makam Ilahîs.
Thursday, December 7 – Meşk – a study into the beautiful Acemaşiran Ayin written by Hüseyin Fahrettin Dede (1854-1911).
