Dear Musical Friends,
The Society for Turkish Classical Music (STCM) is pleased to announce a new session of classes with Dr. Timuçin Çevikoğlu.
We will continue with the online format successfully developed in our first two years of remote classes. This incorporates strong elements of the traditional meşk instruction, with individualized feedback from the teacher, and permits us to come together from our various international locations. We are exploring the possibilities for in-person study opportunities in the U.S. with Dr. Çevikoğlu later in the year.
Course Offerings
The following courses will be offered this session:
Class A: Deep Theory:
This course provides in-depth study of makam and usul theory as taught in the traditional meşk system. Students are guided in a methodical approach to recognizing the essential characteristics of each makam studied, as well as improving their working understanding of this musical system. Students who have previous experience with this music may join the class even if they did not attend in previous years. Check with the registrar if you are interested in this class and have questions about participating. This class begins at 10:00 AM Pacific time and finishes at 11:30 AM.
Class B: Ayin Study
These classes will meet weekly for intensive study of the most highly developed form of Turkish classical music. One of the great Mevlevi Ayins will be chosen for in-depth exploration. The study will include a focus on the makam structures and modulations, the rhythms, the poetry and meanings, and life of the composer. As a practical component of the group learning experience, each student will receive personalized instruction from the teacher. The Deep Theory course is recommended as a corequisite for those taking the Ayin Study class, they will support each other. This class is encouraged for both vocalists and instrumentalists. This class begins at 11:45 AM Pacific time and finishes at 1:15 PM.

The upcoming online course session will begin on Sunday, January 29th. The A and B classes will be held weekly on Sundays from January 29th through April 16th. Each class will meet twelve times.
